China develops "the007" variety of genetically modified corn to fight invasive Fall armyworm
Fall armyworm was first detected for the first time in China in Jan 2019 and has spread across China’s Southern & North-Eastern corn growing region causing losses in tune of 10-15 million tons annually.
The country now imports almost 10-15 million tons of maize annually, primarily due to short supply of corn caused by FAW to meet the domestic consumption pegged at 275 million tons per annum.
Biotech corn variety “the007″developed by LongpingBiotechnology and other Bt corn varieties by Bayer Crop Science are being tested for biosafety and field performance in China to fend off voracious FAW
