Hi Chia-yu Chen, The COI barcode will certainly let you know that you have S. frugiperda. It will also give presumptive results as to the whether you have the ‘rice strain’ or the ‘corn strain’. However, the very interesting paper by Nagoshi (2019) revealed that use of the COI marker cannot differentiate between ‘pure’ strains and hybrids. He showed that whilst the COI barcode results showed the rice strain to be present in Africa, use of a nuclear gene, Tpi (Triosephosphate isomerase), demonstrated that most of the supposed ‘rice strains’ recorded from Africa were likely to be descendants of interstrain… Read more »
Hi Alan, thanks for your very helpful response. Having looked at a few of Nagoshi’s recent papers on FAW in Africa and India, it does appear that there are some contradictions between the COI and Tpi region when it comes to distinguishing between FAW populations in Africa. A combined approach would definitely be more useful. Thank you for your suggestion.
